These orange overnight steel cut oats are made at night and enjoyed in the morning without any cooking!
I feel like I’ve been enlightened.
Overnight
Steel
Cut
Oats.
Who knew?!
You didn’t, right? This isn’t something I’ve just been unaware of the whole time is it?
That tends to happen to me. A lot.
Ulysses said they tasted like bubble gum. I don’t agree whatsoever, but that’s not really a bad taste so I figured I’d put it out there for those who might desire some bubblicious at 7am.
These are a totally different ball game than regular overnight oats, which I’m not a huge fan of because of the totally mushy, gummy consistency they have. These are chewy, nutty and have a delicious orange flavor throughout like your morning glass of OJ and oatmeal got frisky in the fridge overnight.
And after attending a birthday party with 15 kids age 4 and under yesterday, that’s about the only kind of friskiness that’s going down over here for a long time.

I tried a variation of this last night. I like it and my husband loved it. We added juice and zest from a whole orange, omitted maple syrup, added 1 cup of frozen blueberries and upped the almond milk to 1 1/2 cups. Also I forgot the ginger and we didn’t have orange essence. It was amazing. I couldn’t finish a whole serving. Definitely a jaw workout!
haha, yeah the steel cut oats definitely make you work for it! glad you liked it :)
I was searching the web for a steel cut overnight oats recipe and yours was the first reliable source! Thanks so much for this! I was successful in my making my own for this morning (without the orange infusion sorry to say) but it’s such a flexible recipe. Love the chewiness. I can’t agree more about mushy oatmeal BARF! Anyway, I love how wholesome your recipes are. Great blog! I will be a continuous follower!
Oats in a mason jar…so presh. I bet this would be amazing with coconut. I’m gonna try it with Trader Joe’s quick cooking steel cut oats–hopefully those’ll work. And I don’t have orange extract..but oh well that’s not stopping me either!!
I had no idea! I love overnight oats and steel cut oats.
I love that you can make the oatmeal the night before and it is ready to go in the morning.
Hey Gina,

YUM!!! I love this idea! I love OO’s and never thought about citrisy ones! Wonder how else you could use the orange extract. Thanks :)
I’ve really, really tried to like steel cut oats, but I think this recipe might make me LOVE them. Sounds and looks delicious.
Awesome! I just heard about using steel cut oats in overnight oats too, but haven’t tried it yet. Can’t wait because I’m not usually a fan of regular overnight oats for the same reason as you. The orange flavor in yours sounds delicious!
These are great photos. So much light! Seems like a great way to wake up. :)
Thanks!
