While Thanksgiving yesterday consisted of a reasonable portion of callaloo stuffed chicken, mashed potatoes and nutmeg sauce here in Grenada, every other 31 Thanksgivings I’ve experienced (and can remember) have left me sprawled out on the living room couch literally rolling around in pain from eating too much willing my body to start digesting.

Of course, once it did and the pain subsided, I’d just roll myself back to the table, eat a piece of every dessert and then repeat the process again on the couch swearing I wouldn’t do this to myself next year which of course never happened (unless you count leaving the country this year and not having the opportunity to do so at all).

I could talk all day about moderation and how you can survive the holidays in a healthy way.

But honestly, I think I’d rather just have my day in pain and pure food coma bliss on Thanksgiving and throw health out the window.

Until I wake up the next morning.

I’ve never done a juice cleanse (and probably never will) but if there’s one day a year I’d be down with it, it’s Black Friday.

I used Aloha’s Daily Good Green whole food powder in this detox green smoothie as well as almost every other green item in my fridge.

Their powders are made with organic and sustainably grown produce that’s then dried to contain over two half cup servings of vegetables.

It’s a packet with a punch!

Do Green Smoothies Really Detox You?

Probably not in the way you are thinking or hoping. The definition of detox is basically ridding your body of toxins. This can be certain types of foods, certain ingredients, substances, etc.

Is this smoothie healthy? Yes, it’s packed full of nutrition and when you compare that to holiday feasts or a fast-food diet, it does have a positive impact on the body.

Is one smoothie going to detox your body? No. Especially if during the following meals you are going back to unhealthy ingredients.

Basically, it’s packed full of superfoods that over time can help with detoxing because of the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory factors. But honestly, our bodies will never fully be detoxed.

Do Green Smoothies Help With Weight Loss?

Yep, they can when combined with other healthy habits such as portion control, exercise, and a diet that’s full of protein and veggies.

The fiber and protein in the smoothie help to keep you fuller longer, so less snacking. You are also getting all of the other benefits such as vitamins and minerals from the other healthy ingredients.

While it’s nutritious it’s also lower in calories when compared to actual meals.

Is It Okay To Drink a Green Smoothie every day?

Sure. Our bodies need the proper fuel and a smoothie is a great way to get the extra nutrients, especially if you aren’t a big veggie fan to start with.

Ingredients For the Best Green Detox Spinach Smoothie

  • kale – I prefer lacinto/tuscan kale. Kale is full of fiber and other a good source of folate and manganese.
  • baby spinach/greens – you could also use frozen spinach. Here’s where the color comes from mostly, and honestly you can’t even really taste the spinach. Spinach is also a great source of protein and is considered a superfood. It’s one of the main ingredients in this prune smoothie, another delicious “detoxifying” option.
  • lemon – great for a little citrus taste and is packed full of vitamin C and antioxidants
  • ginger – is said to have anti-inflammatory properties and may help with digestion and blood sugar spikes.
  • cucumber – high in Vitamins A, B, and C along with having natural detoxing properties.
  • fresh parsley – brings in additional flavonoids and balances the sweetness of the pear
  • pear – has a good bit of fiber that helps with digestion and adds a little sweetness. Be sure to try my pear smoothie, it’s a fan favorite and not as green!
  • mint leaves – refreshing and rich in antioxidants
  • Daily Good Greens powder – you can use any brands of greens you would like, or omit this completely.
  • water

Detox Smoothie Variations

If you want a little more flavor you can swap the water for almond milk or fruit juice, however, if you are counting calories or macros just remember the smoothie will have more when substituting.

Seeds – flax and chia seeds are powerhouses to be so small, feel free to add a handful in. If you are using flax, try to use a ground flax meal instead of the actual seeds.

More Protein – add in your favorite protein powder for extra nutrition

Other Fruits – apples, bananas, and berries make great healthy additions to smoothies.

This is probably the greenest thing I’ve ever drank.

The flavor is lemony, minty and of course with an undertone of fresh greens but I can guarantee you this: it’ll shock your body back into health after a day of gluttony.
