Paleo challenge: day 31

by Running to the Kitchen on January 31, 2013

From Jan 1 – 31 I’m doing a strict paleo (slightly modified Whole30) challenge with my CrossFit box. I decided to journal the month in food on here (in addition to normal posting) after getting a huge positive response on my Facebook page. I’m also going to detail the amount of sleep I got, the workout for the day and any other relevant notes. I’ll only detail drinks when it’s something other than water or tea, but note that I typically drink 80-100 ounces of water a day. I’ll link to recipes (either mine or other people’s) when applicable, but I don’t usually cook from recipes for myself so if you leave a comment asking for the recipe for something, there is none unless otherwise noted.

……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………..

Notes for the day:

THE END. I almost cheated on the last meal of the 31 days and made quinoa to go with dinner but then realized how much that would’ve pissed me off later and refrained. I will be continuing up until my vacation in mid February but I’m taking the weekend to enjoy a few things that I’ve been without (read: chocolate & cheese) for the past 31 days. Weigh-in, body fat measurement and benchmark wod are tomorrow at Crossfit and my recap/thoughts of this whole thing will be up sometime early next week. It’s been real, but I’m ready to not take a picture of everything I put in my mouth anymore.

Sleep:

8.5 hours

Workout:

rest day

……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………..

Breakfast:

egg + zucchini + carrot scramble

2 slices bacon

1/2 banana w/ almond butter

strawberries

blackberries

coffee with coconut cream

paleo breakfast scramble

Lunch:

pork carnitas

spaghetti squash

sautéed collard greens

pineapple

pork carnitas

Dinner:

I’m looking forward to hearing your thoughts on the challenge! I really like that the Paleo diet takes a WF approach to eating, but the meat consumption/restriction of healthy foods (like oats, quinoa, rice, etc) seems excessive/overly paranoid. I’m on the fence about it. :)

Yeah I hear ya on some of the grains. I think a lot of people think of it as “meat obsessed” but I honestly didn’t feel that way. Meat or “protein” has always made up about 1/3 of my plate when I’m eating and the rest are typically vegetables (with the occasional starch/grain) so I actually felt way more “vegetable obsessed” during these 31 days than meat focused. I’ve seen a paleo food pyramid that has meat on the bottom and veggies above it but for me, those two were reversed. And honestly, I think that’s how it should be. No one needs 50%+ of their plate being protein!

I’ve experimented recently with making my own chocolate using coconut oil and cocoa powder and you can pick which sweetener you would like to use which I guess is more healthy.

I made one batch that was so good I’d rather eat this chocolate than any kind you can buy from the shops which is pretty awesome. :)

Congrats! I’m actually thinking about starting the Paleo diet next week. I’ve been eating mainly vegan, but I need to heal my leaky gut and chronic fatigue syndrome and nothing has really worked yet. I bought practical paleo and the paleo solution and both books are so informative on autoimmune disease! I got a lot of inspiration from your day to day eating diary. Thanks Gina!

I don’t know how you did it but congrats. I have been wondering what my life would be like if I cut out more gluten…
