Edamame dip

by Running to the Kitchen on January 16, 2012

I use the word hate a lot. Probably too much. People are always saying “Gina, hate’s a strong word” to which I want to say “no shit, that’s why I’m using it” half the time. So I feel a little like the boy who cried wolf using it here but there’s really nothing more true than this statement.

I.hate.football.

I hate the sport itself starting first and foremost with it’s misleading name. Unless it’s a punt or a field goal attempt, there are no feet involved. The Europeans are laughing at us dumb American’s for taking the name “football” and applying it to something that really should be called “handball” as far as I’m concerned. Then there’s the fact that it stops pretty much every 5 seconds. Nothing annoying at all about a quarter that’s supposed to be 15 minutes taking a full hour to watch on tv. And lastly, the fact that the whole premise of the game is based upon 300lb+ fat men barbarically tackling each other. Wow, that’s talent.

I know most women are going to disagree with me on this one, but I hate men who watch football. I know, bold statement. I’m not talking about catching a game quietly every now and then, I’m talking about men who “gotta get home for the game,” put on their jerseys to watch the game, don’t allow women in the room, scream at the tv, chant “defense” and refer to the team as “my team.” Get a life. Seriously. There’s nothing more pathetic to me than a man who has to be glued to the tv set every Sunday or the world might end.

I hate that anywhere I go this time of year I hear the dreaded  “duh, duh, duh, duhhhh….” music and mentions of Tim Tebow take up 75% of my twitter feed.

I hate that I have a job that’s in a field about 95% dominated by men and any and all conversations start around whatever football team played that week. No, I don’t care and no, it’s not because I’m a girl (I’ll gladly watch a real sport like soccer or hockey) and don’t understand it. I can talk about football all day long (thanks to a football obsessed father), I just think it’s stupid and a waste of my brain cells.

And also, I hate that football is associated with the crappiest of all foods, soda and beer. Nothing screams appetizing like some wings and Bud Light.

If you’re gonna watch the dreaded sport, at least eat something delicious (and somewhat good for you).

Like edamame dip. Winking smile

Edamame Dip

Prep time

Total time

A healthy dip alternative, perfect for watching “the game” or as a party appetizer.
Author:
Recipe type: appetizer, side dish
Serves: about 1.5 cups

Ingredients
  • 1¼ cup shelled, cooked edamame
  • ¾ cup cannellini beans
  • 1 clove garlic
  • zest of 1 lemon
  • juice of 1 lemon
  • ⅛ teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • ¼ cup loosely packed fresh parsley
  • 5 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
  • salt & pepper to taste

Instructions
  1. Combine all ingredients except olive oil in a food processor.
  2. Process until combined, scraping down the sides once.
  3. With the processor running, drizzle in olive oil slowly.
  4. Process until smooth.
  5. Season with salt & pepper.

*While all these statements do accurately represent my feelings on the sport, yes, there’s a bit of sarcasm in here and this tirade was prompted by chanting men in Giants jerseys watching the game at A CHRISTENING dinner last night.

Yeah, I just don’t GET that whole football thing. It’s just a game. Whether “your team” wins or loses, it won’t really make one whit of a difference in life, right??

More importantly, this dip is such a good idea and also so pretty and spring-y. I say eat the dip and screw the game :)

hahaha I’m not too big on football either, but I’ll definitely watch it with friends if thats whats going on. I was out at a bar the other night for the game and it was obscene how many people were out and how everyone’s sole focus was the television.

What a pretty dip! I love your shots of the edamame. I agree with you on football — the part on where guys have to “get home” to watch the game. Thankfully, my bf isn’t like that, otherwise, we probably wouldn’t be together haha

haha, I tell my husband all the time that there’s no way I would’ve married him if he was a “sports guy” haha.

Haha, I know exactly what you mean. Although football isn’t as big here, so I just sub hockey in where you said football and then I agree. I have no problem with the average fan, but I remember a ton of totally inappropriate situations where extreme fans wore their jerseys to something completely unrelated and turned on the game in the middle. Seriously? I can’t believe that they can’t live without for a short period of time.
Anyways, love the dip. I’ve seen edamame used in dips but never tried it. I love edamame so I’ll have to try it soon. Plus, I’m convinced my kids will try anything if I let them dip it, haha.

This dip sounds amazing, Gina. I think I have some edamame in the freezer too…

your dip looks great but all I’m thinking of is “pre-shelled edamame would have saved her so much time:”! More time to go watch the NFL highlight reels! Kidding :)

“There’s nothing more pathetic to me than a man who has to be glued to the tv set every Sunday or the world might end.” <– AMEN sista!

I will concede that bud light is crap (as are most commercial beers), but I love wings. And good beer (huzzah for the micro brew). I used to hate going out with my ex during football season. We would be in a quiet restaurant and he would start cheering. I just made edamame, but not for a dip. I’ll be trying this soon.

my hubs is a fan”ish” we don’t really watch games, but we have our teams that we love, we have jerseys for parties (and because the captain LOVES them) and yesterday, during the playoff game, we left the sports bar halfway through to go home. We did listen on the radio, though.

I do LOVE a good themed party, though. LOVE them.

Ha ha! You had me laughing through the entire post. I could definitely picture “that guy”. Though I don’t mind a little football now and then, when my husband worked less hours and watched football 4 days out of the week, I did a lot of complaining.

Haha…I really like your blog, and I also really like football! I’m a huge fan, and there’s actually a lot more to it then just “hitting”, but I can see your frustration! ;) That dip looks great, and I had to laugh out loud because I was at a Christening yesterday too, until I had to go home and scream at the T.V. for the Giants! :)

This looks fantastic! The color seriously rocks and it’s something I’d like to eat on the back patio with a glass of wine. Doesn’t feel like being wasted on football food at all :) (Unless it’s a Super Bowl party because I really like an excuse to eat, be with friends and watch commercials!)

I feel like it has to be fake and put on when someone appears to be that much of a fan. Enjoying it is one thing but obsessed with people you don’t even know is kind of pathetic! I just finishes up my edammame last night but now I have a reason to buy more!

I just love your blog! I am not crazy about the men that drop everything for a football game! So annoying and weird! My Husband isn’t like that, except sometimes he’s get like that over NASCAR, which is even worse. It’s just a bunch of cars going in circles.

The dip looks wonderful. I’m going to make this for sure!!!

Oh Nascar….haha. At least there doesn’t seem to be as many of those races as there are football games!

Reply

32 Jennifer @ Peanut Butter and Peppers January 17, 2012 at 10:33 am

Stupid Nasacr runs from February to October! It’s forever long! Every Sunday or Saturday night my Husband spends the whole day watching them. The race can be 3 to 4 hours long, pleas post and preshows. What a waste of a day! To boot, Sunday is the only day we have together and he’s watching that! Matter in fact February is getting close. One year they had the first race on Valentine’s Day! That was a fun day! I know more about Nascar then I care to! lol

I hate football too. However, I find game time to be PERFECT for food shopping …no ones in the stores and you can get ‘er done. Especially in the market basket by me which is total mayhem 99% of the time.

Hahaha this post made me chuckle, I completely agree with you I cannot stand some mens utter devotion to ‘their’ teams, you would think they were the ones out there on the damn pitch. Every now and then I could see why it might be fun to watch a game but not religiously! But rant aside, your dip looks delish!! :)

I’m with you on loathing football. I’m fine with—and I even like—hockey and baseball, but I just don’t “get” football. I hate it because football games always ruin my birthday parties (around American thanksgiving) which turn into “let’s watch the game” parties, and so I almost never host them. Maybe I should have been born in July.

This recipe looks awesome!

Wow, and I thought I was queen of the Angry Tirade. I had a guy not communicate with me at all during games, cause he said he ignores all “outside distractions.” Um, can you say “buh-bye, freak-o.” Guess what, if your team loses, oh my gosh, look at that, the sun still rose the next day!

I love wings, and a good micro-brew (haven’t had a Bud Light–or toilet water, whatever you wanna call it–since college). I don’t see anything wrong with game day food, as long as it’s once in awhile. I enjoy it, and am a perfectly, healthy-weighted (?) 28-year-old. However, this edamame dip (or “edamommy” as I call it), is an awesome healthy dip, and I will most definitely be making it. And really, if Bud Light is your preferred beverage, well, drink on. Who am I to judge?

This looks great, definitely worthy of being in your first year’s top 25. I love how you have the parsley in there making the edamame a little greener (and adding flavor, of course). I’m with you on not being into the excessive football talk. So is my husband. Not all men are into big commercial sports, especially ones where guys go around giving each other concussions and long-term brain damage. My husband reads the sports pages at crucial times to avoid looking like a know-nothing at work.

So nice to hear there are other anti-football people out there ;) So true about the concussions and brain injury part. Seriously, what kind of “sport” is this?!

I love this website and usually find it to cook recipes and whatnot, but this part of the sentence, “upon 300lb+ fat men barbarically tackling each other” I find really offensive. My brother used to play football, I’m not a huge fan myself, but he was 280 and in no way was he fat. He worked out all the time and ran. That’s a rude stereotype. I understand it’s your blog and you can say what you wish but I just found that to be a rude thing to day, especially coming from somebody who grew up with a father so interested in the sport. I also don’t understand how it isn’t a real sport. There’s running, you’re catching, you’re having to stay on your feet, and think ahead of another team, it’s no different than any other sport.

Lighter note, I do love this recipe.

Sorry it offends you. The post is obviously written in jest (and even noted so on the bottom). Sounds like you read somewhat often from your comment so I’m surprised you wouldn’t have realized a lot my writing has a bit of a sarcastic undertone. Not sure what to tell you besides you don’t have to read if you can’t see past that in this post. I’m also a firm believer in stereotypes existing for a reason. While your brother may not be “a 300lb+ fat man”, many of the football players (especially the defense) are. I personally think it’s a little ridiculous to take an obviously exaggerated stereotype and say you find it rude, but to each their own.
