How to Properly Clean Mushrooms

Cleaning mushrooms the RIGHT way is an important step in maintaining texture & maximizing their flavor.

Mushrooms are dirty due to how they're grown.

In the wild, they grow on dirt and mossy surfaces. When farmed, they're grown in a dirt & peat mixture.

There are two distinct methods to cleaning mushrooms...

Dry method vs. Wet method

The dry method involves gently brushing off the dirt using a brush or towel.

While more tedious, it leads to better caramelization of the mushrooms in a recipe.

The wet method offers two options:

Bowl vs. Strainer

The bowl method quickly submerges the mushrooms in water.

Whereas the strainer utilizes a quick rinse.

Certain varieties of mushrooms, like morels, have a specific cleaning process.
