This BLTC sandwich draws inspiration from all the delicious late summer produce using heirloom tomatoes and fresh basil for a seasonal twist to the classic on seedy multigrain bread.

Because I just refuse to let summer go before basically being dragged kicking and screaming into the cooler fall weather, here I am a few days after Labor Day, summer’s unofficial end, putting a seasonal twist on the classic BLTC sandwich!

I’m not even sorry about it.

Sure, the apples are starting to creep in now that it’s September here in the apple state but honestly, it’s not even exaggerating to say we’re still flush with summer produce because WE ARE!

From zucchini to tomatoes or eggplant to corn and all the fresh herbs, September is more summer than it is fall both from what the calendar tells us and what the farmers’ markets say.

A summer inspired BLT with cheese on multigrain seeded bread is a delicious seasonal lunch.

I know a good BLT is a classic and I wouldn’t go as far to say I don’t like them but I always feel like there’s something missing from them.

Like there’s just not enough ingredients between those two slices of bread or something.

Enter cheese.

A few thick slices of cheese not only solves this dilemma for me, it elevates the sandwich from a taste, texture and nutritional standpoint as well.

Much like smoked salmon does in this avocado smoked salmon BLT, another great twist on the classic sandwich.

Basil and heirloom tomatoes put a seasonal spin on the classic BLTC (bacon, lettuce, tomato and cheese).

1-cheese is delicious.

2-it adds a creaminess to an otherwise pretty crunchy sandwich

3-the added protein gives it a bit more staying power

Add cheese to your BLT and sub basil for lettuce for a summer twist to the classic sandwich.

I chose to use Land O Lakes® Deli American slices in this BLTC sandwich because a classic sandwich calls for a classic ingredient and what’s more classic than Deli American? 

It’s what we all grew up on and with an ingredient list we can get behind, because in 2018 that matters a bit more than it did back in the day.

Land O Lakes® Deli American is sliced fresh at the deli counter and don’t worry, you can get both yellow and white – as I know many people have strong opinions about which one they prefer!

BLTC sandwiches are even better than the classic. Use thick deli sliced American cheese for a tasty boost to the classic sandwich.

The creamy Deli American with a touch of salt is the perfect addition to the multi-grain seeded bread, crispy bacon, juicy heirloom tomatoes and fresh basil.

As someone who doesn’t like mayo on my sandwiches (especially not a BLT because it basically becomes a club then), Deli American brings a great alternative to the table!

If you’re not a fan of basil and want a more classic lettuce vibe in your BLT, you can always swap out Bibb lettuce or even mizuna lettuce for a fancier twist!

Summer BLTC Sandwich

This BLTC sandwich draws inspiration from all the delicious late summer produce using heirloom tomatoes and fresh basil for a seasonal twist to the classic on seedy multigrain bread.

Ingredients 

  • 2 slices seeded multigrain bread
  • 3 slices Land O Lakes® Deli American
  • 4 slices ripe heirloom tomato
  • 2 slices crispy cooked bacon
  • handful fresh basil leaves

Instructions 

  • Toast bread.
  • Break each slice of Land O Lakes® Deli American in half and place 3 pieces of cheese on one slice of bread.
  • Lay half the basil on top, then tomatoes, bacon, the other half of the basil and finish with the remaining half of Deli American.
  • Top with the other slice of bread and enjoy!
