Hummus toast with honey drizzled apple slices and sweet, tart pomegranate arils makes a delicious snack or pair with a hardboiled egg for a protein boosted quick and easy balanced breakfast.

Avocado toast may have ruled the internet (at least from a food perspective) the last couple of years but I’m making a prediction for 2019 and going forward – hummus toast is where it’s gonna be at!
Here’s what excites me about hummus toast taking over the world:
-no waiting for an avocado to get to that perfect level of ripeness (we’ve all seen that meme about avocados right? – so true) But hey, if you do have that perfect avocado, try this avocado tartine.
-for what it costs to buy 1 avocado (well, anywhere but California, you lucky son of a guns), you can buy an entire container of hummus.
-the pressure to make fancy avocado fans and roses and all that jazz gets taken off because there’s only one way to apply hummus to bread…by spreading it. My less than artistic self really likes this one.
Why Hummus Toast?
Part of me just wants to say “because I said so” in a mom voice (one thing that saddens me about not having kids is I’ll never get to say that to anyone who has to listen to it).
- It’s a great snack.
- It’s a quick, easy and portable breakfast.
- It’s nicely balanced between protein, carbs and fat making it macro friendly.
- The topping possibilities are endless.
I personally love hummus toast as a snack.
It’s a go-to for me in that 11am-1pm timeframe when I haven’t eaten lunch yet but need something to hold me over.
I do eat it for breakfast often as well (did you see my everything bagel seasoned hummus toast on Instagram?) but usually like to pair it with some extra protein like a hardboiled egg or a yogurt for some extra staying power.
I love me some hummus toast but I’d have to eat a lot of it to keep me full for an entire meal.
Let’s talk toppings…
What Do You Put on Hummus Toast?
There are 3 components to hummus toast:
- bread
- hummus
- toppings
After you pick your bread (I used rye bread for this honey apple version), you need to decide on your toppings.
Whether you want to go savory or sweet will help determine your hummus flavor.
Sweet is always fun and obviously the approach I went for here with this honey apple hummus toast with pomegranates.
ps- check out this pomegranate popcorn for another fun way to use pomegranate seeds in an easy snack idea!
I tend to be seasonal in most my food choices so other great sweet options this time of year would be:
- pears
- citrus
- persimmons
- bananas
- kiwis
A lot of those fruit would be delicious with Sabra’s lemon twist hummus like I used here.
For the savory route, the options are almost endless! Some ideas I like for savory hummus toast:
- chorizo
- sautéed mushrooms
- pickled vegetables (sort of like this Asian hummus platter)
- sunny-side up/poached egg
- cherry tomatoes
- goat cheese or feta crumbles
A similar recipe that combines both sweet and savory flavors is this hummus flatbread recipe with grilled corn and summer fruit. It’s the cousin of hummus toast!
And then there’s this fall hummus pizza recipe that’s another great seasonally alternative way to enjoy hummus!
But really, the list could go on and on for all the possibilities out there when it comes to picking your hummus toast toppings.
What Kind of Bread Do You Use For Hummus Toast?
Again, I like to pair my bread with my approach for the hummus toast.
If I’m going the sweet route, I’ll either choose something that complements that like a sweeter bread, an English muffin (check out my 2 minute paleo English muffins to keep things gluten-free) or bagel.
Or, like in this case, I wanted something that toned down the sweetness of the toppings but not necessarily in a savory way. Rye bread was perfect for that.
If I’m going the savory route, a hearty multigrain bread, everything seasoned bread, whole wheat or even a crusty baguette are all good options.
I also like to toast my bread to the point where it’s not soft any more but not crumbly and hard either for hummus toast.
I hope that’s enough convincing for you guys to get on the hummus toast train with me.
Let’s make 2019 the year we oust avocado in favor of hummus!
