Mission #2 was to try out a new to me athletic experience, hot yoga.
Yoga has been one of those fitness outlets I love in theory more than in practice for the last 10 years. I took yoga in college for fitness credits and it was just “eh” as it catered to the masses of 20 year old, hungover college kids just trying to get the appropriate credits to graduate. I’ve done Jillian Michaels yoga DVDs and appreciated the heavier focus on the “workout” part but let’s be real, Jillian is no yogi. And then I’ve taken yoga classes in a studio with instructors who didn’t even seem to live on the same planet as me (“hippie” wouldn’t even do justice in describing them) as we “opened our hearts”, “dedicated our practice” and “lifted our spirits” throughout the whole class…yeah, that’s just not “me”.
The one yoga experience I hadn’t tried however, was hot yoga and while I was excited to try it out as I usually am for any new workout experience, I didn’t really have high expectations.
(sorry for the lack of pictures, busting out a camera in a serene, dark yoga studio pretty much guarantees a few stares & head shakes)
My friend Janice and I hit up the 9am hot yoga class at a nearby studio and guess what? I was wrong. It was the perfect balance of stretching, physically challenging your body and mental relaxation and with a normal instructor! I loved the added element of heat because it made it that much harder and really felt like a good workout in the end. Good enough that we came home and munched on an ice cream sandwich for good measure.
I left feeling inspired to try to incorporate yoga into my routine at least once a week. As we bent into positions that I remember I used to be able to do, I thought to myself, “hmm, guess you don’t really get more flexible after 30 if you don’t practice!” CrossFit is great and I’d never trade the strength gains and muscle I’ve gained from it over the last year, but there’s definitely something to be said about stretching your body out to keep it flexible, strong and aligned when you plan to beat it up all week with heavy weights. It only took 10 years, but I think I’ve finally found a yoga class I’ll be going back to.
I’ll be back with the last mission in a few weeks, hosting a “mocktail” party!
