Paleo challenge: day 12

From Jan 1 – 31 I’m doing a strict paleo (slightly modified Whole30) challenge with my CrossFit box. I decided to journal the month in food on here (in addition to normal posting) after getting a huge positive response on my Facebook page. I’m also going to detail the amount of sleep I got, the workout for the day and any other relevant notes. I’ll only detail drinks when it’s something other than water or tea, but note that I typically drink 80-100 ounces of water a day. I’ll link to recipes (either mine or other people’s) when applicable, but I don’t usually cook from recipes for myself so if you leave a comment asking for the recipe for something, there is none unless otherwise noted.

Notes for the day:

We went out to eat for dinner and while I held strong at dinner I decided to splurge on a mocha latte from the new café next door afterwards. A few things: 1. it was incredibly disappointing (when I saw the Hershey’s chocolate syrup come out for the mocha I knew it was going to be bad) 2. I don’t understand why coffee shops don’t carry almond milk as a dairy alternative instead of just soy. 3. While I’ve “thought” this for awhile (and will go into more depth in my recap of this month), dairy has a big affect on me. The 1/2 cup or so of skim that I drank in that latte did me no favors. It was nice to finally be able to pinpoint it specifically as the culprit since it was the only variable at the time.

9.5 hours

What restaurant did you go too? That pork chop looks amazing!

    Something different for breakfast!

Ugh ya… dairy. I had a similar experience last year. I thought maybe since I hadn’t had it in FOREVER that my body would somehow (miraculously) be able to handle it. Nope. No… it couldn’t. You’re right though, at least now you know for certain!

I don’t get it either… why coffee shops don’t carry almond milk, that is… A lot of people are now avoiding soy – and I’m sure they would want those customers in!
I once brought my own almond milk (in a carton) to a Starbucks and asked the girl to use it for my mocha…. Turns out bringing your own milk is a little frowned upon. Haven’t done it since – but haven’t had a coffee from a coffee-shop either (this was 1.5 months ago!!)…

    Should someone start a petition???

      Gina Matsoukas says:

the coconut cream I’m taking about is just the cream part from the top of a can of (full fat) coconut milk. If you put a can in the fridge overnight, the cream part hardens on the top.
