Surprise! I hopped on the blood orange train.

Partly because they were on killer sale, partly because I couldn’t actually remember what they tasted like it had been so long since I had one and partly because I’m lame and figured everyone else was doing it, why not me? I’m not above admitting it.

So, here we are face to face with another fruit that leaves a murder scene in your kitchen like those pomegranate chocolate chip pancakes.

Granted, this one doesn’t take 20 minutes of picking apart so it’s definitely got the advantage.

Citrus this time of year is one of the few things that makes winter bearable.

Although, I’d rather live a life without citrus for the exchange of warm, sunny days all year round (oh wait, that exists, it’s called Florida) if I had the choice.

Blood orange smoothie

I don’t have a choice right now though so instead, I’ll sip my fresh, tart and just slightly sweet blood orange smoothie and keep bugging Ulysses to pick some days that we’re going back to the sunshine state in February.

Blood orange smoothie

Seriously Ulys, pick the damn days.

  1. I live in Pittsburgh, PA. And the 10 for $10 was definitely not just a typo, because there was another display of them elsewhere in the store labeled at the same price. Crazy!!

  2. I have never tried a blood orange, but REGULAR orangeswere 10 for $10.00 at my grocery store on Sunday. That is insane!!! Or is it?!? Is that an outrageous price for oranges, or am I out of touch with reality?

    1. $1 per orange!? That does sound insane! Considering the blood oranges were .69 cents a piece that’s outrageous! Where do you live? I can’t believe that they’re that expensive this time of year.

  3. I’ve actually been wanting to experiment with smoothie recipes lately, so this is perfect timing! I hope blood oranges are in season in Illinois, too?

  4. confession: I don’t have a blender. Is that insane or what? I definitely need to invest in one before summer time. I have a ton of of smoothie making to do to make up for lost times

    1. Oh my gosh, you definitely need one! I’ve been wanting a Vitamix or Blendtec for some time now but just can’t justify the $.

  5. silly goose, you don’t have to live without citrus in Florida!

I have never had a non alcoholic blood orange concoction. Hmmm. It’s something to think about.
The blood orange on my blog was begging for vodka, I promise.

      1. Its an Italian thing too because I do it all the time. I add a splash of soda just because I have a thing for bubbles. Also really good? Gin.

  6. I tasted blood orange juice at Whole Foods for the first time this weekend. It reminded me of a cross between a grapefruit and an orange. I loved it! I am going to hopefully pick some up this weekend. Maybe some pomegranates too… so my boyfriend will get counter scrubbing practice.

  7. yum yum yum. I’m obsessed with smoothies and I so want to make this. I was at the store yesterday and I saw a HUGE vat of this and wanted to get some but wasn’t sure if I knew fruit well enough to make something delicious out of it..and well, you must’ve read my mind ;)

  8. I’ve never had a blood orange but I’m just heading out the door now to the store and really want to pick one up. Is the taste similar to a regular orange. And I feel your pain about the whole winter thing…. it’s a snowy wonderland outside my window right now and I’m about to hop on my bike, eeeek!

    1. It’s more tart than a regular orange kind of like a cross between a grapefruit and an orange like Lindsay said below. I love grapefruits so it’s right up my alley.
